FAQs

General

  • What should I expect when you come out for a free estimate?

Our goal is to keep things simple, be respectful of your time, and be completely pressure-free. We start by going over your project and answering any questions you may have. From there, we take measurements for the areas you would like quoted.

We don’t have a sales pitch, and we are not the type of company that stays for hours, leaving you feeling uncomfortable and trying to pressure you into signing a contract on the spot. We believe in treating people that way we want to be treated, so we simply gather the information needed, answer your questions, leave you with a folder of proof of license and insurance, information on our financing options, and brochures of the products we use, and let you make the decision that is right for you.

After the appointment, we put together your estimate and send it to you by email within a few business days. We don’t give pricing on the spot or push for a same-day decision. If we haven’t heard back from you after about a week from sending your estimate via email, we will follow up once to check in and see if you have any further questions. After that, we won’t continue reaching out unless you contact us first.

  • What are my payment options?

We offer financing through Synchrony Financial with several options designed to fit your budget. Our most popular option is our 18-month, no-interest plan. If you would like to explore financing options, you can visit our Financing tab for more information.

We also accept cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.

  • Will the price change after I signed a contract and the project begins?

We stand by the pricing we agree upon up front, so in most cases, your price will not change once the project begins. The only exception would be if we uncover unexpected issues during the project, such as extensive hidden rotted wood or other unforeseen damage that wasn’t visible at the time of the estimate. If that happens, we will always talk it through with you so there are no surprises.

  • Are you licensed in Missouri?

Yes, we are fully licensed in the state of Missouri. If you ever have questions about our credentials or would like a copy of our business license, we would be more than happy to provide you with one.

  • Do you have insurance?

Yes, we carry worker’s compensation insurance to protect our employees in the event of an on-the-job injury, as well as liability insurance to help protect your home and property in the unlikely event of accidental damage. We believe in doing things the right way, so you can feel confident knowing you’re protected while we’re hard at work.

  • Do you have references of your work?

Yes, we have plenty of references available. We can provide addresses for projects we have completed in the past so you can drive by and see our work in person, if you would like. We are proud of what we do and are always happy to share examples so you can feel confident in the quality you can expect from us.

  • Do you have a showroom where I can see product samples?

We sure do! Our showroom is located at 7839 Mexico Road in St. Peters, MO, and we'd love for you to stop by. We have a display home, full-size siding displays in all available colors, and samples of our roofing shingles, double hung windows, sliding patio door, Affinity Stone, columns, and shutters. Seeing the products in person can be a great way to compare colors, styles, and options before making a decision.

Roofing

  • How do I know if my roof needs to be replaced?

Common signs that might suggest the need of a new roof is if you notice excessive granules in your gutters and/or downspouts, shingles curling up, and/or leaks. Most roofs can last between 20 to 30 years, so if you are within that time period and are seeing any of those signs, you are probably due for a new roof. Additionally, if a severe storm with high winds and/or hail comes through, it is worth having a contractor come out to check for any damage.

  • What steps are involved in the roof replacement process?

We start by protecting your landscaping and preparing the work area. Your old roofing materials are then removed, and the roof decking is inspected to make sure everything underneath is in good condition. Any damaged or rotted wood that is found will be replaced. From there, we install the necessary waterproofing materials and underlayment before installing your new shingles and replacing flashing where needed.

Once the roof is complete, we perform a thorough cleanup, including using a powerful magnet to pick up stray nails around your property. Before installation day, we’ll also ask that vehicles be moved out of the garage and driveway to ensure that we have plenty of room to work safely and efficiently.

  • Do you tear off the old roof or install on top of it?

We always tear off the old roof, as it allows us to inspect the plywood beneath it to check for rot. If there is rot, we will replace the plywood before we begin installation of your roof.

  • How long does installation take?

Most roofs on residential homes can be replaced in one day. Churches or larger buildings or homes may take 2 days.

  • What if it rains during the roof installation?

We have very large tarps in the event that it does start to rain. We watch the weather closely to ensure that we do not install on a day that rain is forecasted, but here in Missouri, weather is very unpredictable.

  • What warranties will my new roof come with?

We install IKO Dynasty and Nordic shingles, both of which come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. The first 15 years are covered at 100% on qualifying manufacturing defects, giving our homeowners strong protection and peace of mind. After that, the warranty continues on a prorated basis.

In addition to the manufacturer's warranty, we here at Home Comfort Exteriors stand behind our work with a 25-year workmanship warranty. We take pride in doing the job right and we want you to feel confident knowing that your investment in your home is protected for years to come.

  • Do you work with insurance claims?

Yes, we have a lot of experience working with insurance claims. We can go over your insurance documentation with you to make sure that your insurance covers all the required items they need to. There are often instances where insurance has missed required code upgrade items, such as drip edge, and we can help to make sure that they cover them. At the end of the day, we are on your side and will advocate for everything that needs to be replaced.

  • How do I know if I need a roofing permit?

In most cities, a permit is not required for roofing replacements, but if your city does call for one, we will obtain it for you.

  • Why are there black streaks on my roof?

Those black streaks are usually caused by a type of algae that can grow on asphalt shingles over time. While it doesn’t typically damage the roof right away, it can make the roof look older and less attractive than it really is. The shingles we install are designed to help prevent this issue. They contain copper-infused granules that inhibit algae growth and help keep your roof looking cleaner for longer. They also come with a warranty that protects against algae discoloration, giving you added peace of mind.

  • What is the difference between ridge vents and box vents?

The biggest difference comes down to how they ventilate your attic. Ridge vents run along the entire peak of the roof, allowing air to escape evenly across the roofline. Box vents, commonly known as turtle vents or static vents, are individual vents installed in specific areas near the top of the roof. Both remove heat and moisture from your attic, but ridge vents provide more consistent ventilation.

  • Can I get a new roof in winter?

Yes, as long as the weather cooperates. We install roofs when the temperature is above 40 degrees because shingles can become brittle and crack during the installation process when it is too cold outside.

Siding

  • How can I tell if my siding needs to be replaced?

There’s no set timeline for when siding needs to be replaced. In fact, quality siding that is installed properly can last a lifetime. However, severe weather, moisture issues, or poor installation can sometimes lead to damage that requires repair or replacement.

If you notice cracks, warping, loose pieces, or other visible damage, it may be worth your time to have it looked at. Over the years, the sun can also cause siding to fade. While fading doesn’t necessarily mean the siding is failing, many homeowners choose to replace it to refresh the look of their home. It can also be difficult to match the color of older siding if a repair is needed.

If you’re noticing damage or simply thinking about updating your home’s appearance, we’re always happy to provide a free, no-pressure estimate and an honest opinion on whether a repair or replacement makes the most sense.

  • How long will it take to replace my siding?

A timeframe for replacing your siding is very situational, depending on the size of your home, as well as weather conditions. Typically, a full house of siding could take between 5 to 9 business days of good working weather.

  • Do I need to get a permit for the siding installation?

In most cities, a permit is not required for vinyl siding replacement, but if your city does call for one, we will obtain it.

  • What is included in my siding estimate?

The estimate includes a tear off of any old vinyl siding and installation of new vinyl siding, as well as a quarter inch foam insulation board behind the new siding, and new accessories including mounts for lights, faucets and outlets, as well as gable vents and dryer vents.

  • Do you offer a warranty on both materials and labor?

Absolutely! The siding products we install from Exterior Portfolio are backed by a Double Lifetime Warranty, meaning that coverage extends to both the original homeowner AND the next owner of the home. That’s a benefit that you don’t often see with other manufacturers, as warranties are often reduced or prorated when ownership changes.

In addition to the manufacturer's warranty, we here at Home Comfort Exteriors stand behind our work with a 25-year workmanship warranty. We take pride in doing the job right and we want you to feel confident knowing your investment is protected for years to come!

  • Do all the colors of siding cost the same?

No. While the colors in our Basic palette are included in our standard pricing, some colors do come with an additional cost.

We use the Market Square line of siding from Exterior Portfolio, which offers three color collections. The Basic palette consists of twelve lighter colors and is included with our standard pricing. The Premium palette offers six medium-toned colors that are generally a little darker, while the Expressions palette features the darkest color options available.

The Premium and Expressions color palettes come with an additional costs, due to the extra pigmentation required during the manufacturing process. If you’re considering one of these upgraded colors, we will clearly outline any additional charges in your estimate so there are no surprises.

  • Do you work with insurance claims?

Yes, we have a lot of experience working with insurance claims. We can go over your insurance documentation with you to make sure that your insurance covers all the required items they need to. There are often instances where insurance has missed required code upgrade items and we can help to make sure that they cover them. At the end of the day, we are on your side and will advocate for everything that needs to be replaced.

  • Why does some siding appear wavy or uneven on other homes?

This is usually a sign that it wasn’t installed properly. Vinyl siding naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes, so it needs room to move. If it is fastened too tightly or the panels weren’t installed with enough space, the siding can begin to buckle or look uneven over time. When installed correctly, siding should maintain a smooth, clean appearance and perform the way it is intended to for years to come.

  • What is a "square" of siding?

A “square” is just an industry term for 100 square feet of siding. Think of this as an area that is 10 feet by 10 feet. It’s the measurement that contractors use when calculating how much siding your project will need and preparing your estimate.

Windows &

Sliding Patio Doors

  • Are your windows custom-sized or stock?

All of our windows are custom made to fit your home's exact window openings. We take detailed measurements before ordering to ensure a proper fit, helping your windows look great and perform their best for years to come.

  • What type of warranty is offered for your windows and sliding patio doors?

We install Alliance windows and sliding patio doors. They come with a lifetime warranty on seal failures and the moving parts that keep your windows working properly. They also include a 25-year accidental glass breakage warranty on their double hung and slider windows, which is a really nice added layer of peace of mind.

In addition to the manufacturer's warranty, we here at Home Comfort Exteriors stand behind our work with a 25-year workmanship warranty. We take pride in doing the job right and we want you to feel confident knowing your investment is protected for years to come!

  • Are there color options other than white?

Yes, Alliance offers several color options available beyond white. Keep in mind that upgraded colors do come with an additional cost.

  • Are the windows single or double paned?

Most roofs on residential homes can be replaced in one day. Churches or larger buildings or homes may take 2 days.

  • What time of the year is the best to replace my windows or sliding patio door?

We install windows and sliding patio doors year-round and take special care during the cold of winter or heat of the summer. When it is extremely hot or cold outside, we always have the new window or sliding patio door ready to be installed as soon as the old one is removed to try and maintain the temperature in your home.

  • How do I know if I need to replace my windows or sliding patio door?

If your windows or sliding patio door are original to the home, especially builder-grade products, they’re often ready for replacement after around 20 years.

You will usually start to notice the signs over time: drafts coming through, difficulty opening or closing them, or issues like failed seals that cause fogging between the glass. When those things start showing up, it’s typically a good indication that it is time to consider replacing them.

  • Will replacement windows increase the value of my home?

Yes, we have a lot of experience working with insurance claims. We can go over your insurance documentation with you to make sure that your insurance covers all the required items they need to. There are often instances where insurance has missed required code upgrade items, such as drip edge, and we can help to make sure that they cover them. At the end of the day, we are on your side and will advocate for everything that needs to be replaced.

  • What do Low E, Argon Gas, U-Factor, R-Factor, and Warm Edge Spacer mean?

These are all different features and ratings that describe how energy-efficient a window is and how well it keeps your home comfortable.

    • Low E is a special coating on the glass that helps reflect heat and UV rays, so your home stays cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
    • Argon gas is an invisible gas sealed between the panes of glass that adds extra insulation.
    • The U-Factor and R-Factor are simply ways to measure how well a window performs; one tells you how much heat can escape while the other shows how well it resists heat loss.
    • The Warm Edge Spacer is the piece between the glass panes that helps reduce heat loss around the edges and can also help with condensation.

  • Do you repair window screens or broken windows?

We don’t offer repair services; we focus on full replacements. In most cases, replacing the window is the better long-term solution anyway, since it addresses the full performance of the unit, not just the visible issue.

Soffit and Fascia

  • What are soffit and fascia?

Soffit and Fascia are often mentioned together because they work as a team to help protect your home and keep your attic properly ventilated.

The soffit is located underneath your roof’s overhang. It covers the underside of the eaves and often contains vents that allow fresh air to flow into the attic. This airflow helps reduce heat and moisture buildup, which is important for the overall health of your home.

The fascia is the board that runs along the edge of the roof, just behind your gutters. It’s covered with aluminum to help protect it from the elements and give it a clean, finished look. The fascia also provides the support needed to hold your gutters securely in place.

While they both have different jobs, both soffit and fascia play an important role in protecting your home and helping your roofing system perform the way it should.

  • How do I know if I need soffit and fascia?

If the underside of your roof overhangs is exposed wood, or if the wood requires regular painting and maintenance, your home may be a good candidate for soffit and fascia. Both help to give your home a clean, finished appearance, but they do more than just improve curb appeal.

Soffit assists in the ventilation of your attic and helps keep pests, such as wasps and other insects, from making homes in your rafters, while fascia helps protect the roof edge from the elements and provides support for your gutters.

  • Do they both need to be replaced at the same time, or can I just replace one of them?

You can absolutely just replace the fascia if that is all that your home needs. However, if you think that you may want or need soffit down the road, it is usually best to do both at the same time. Since soffit and fascia are installed together, adding soffit later on requires removing and redoing the fascia that is already there. Taking care of both at once will save time, labor, and most importantly money in the long run.

  • What type of soffit material do you use?

We primarily use vinyl center vent soffit panels, as they are maintenance free, more affordable than other options, and they provide optimal attic ventillation.

Gutters

  • How do I know when I need to replace my gutters?

If they are leaking, dented, sagging, or pulling away from your home, those are usually good signs that it is time to consider a replacement. A lot of older gutter systems were installed with nails, which can loosen over time. Today, we use proper gutter screws that hold much more securely and help the system stay in place long-term.

  • Are your gutters seamless?

Yes, our gutters are seamless, and custom made on site to fit your home specifically. That means fewer joints and seams, which helps reduce the chances of leaks and gives everything a cleaner, more finished look.

  • What size gutter and downspout should I choose?

Common signs that might suggest the need of a new roof is if you notice excessive granules in your gutters and/or downspouts, shingles curling up, and/or leaks. Most roofs can last between 20 to 30 years, so if you are within that time period and are seeing any of those signs, you are probably due for a new roof. Additionally, if a severe storm with high winds and/or hail comes through, it is worth having a contractor come out to check for any damage.

  • How many downspouts do I need?

At a minimum, every gutter run needs at least one downspout to move water away from your home. From there, it really depends on the length of the gutter and how much water it needs to handle.

Longer runs often benefit from a second downspout to help everything drain more efficiently and prevent overflow during heavy rain. If you’re unsure, we can always take a look and recommend what will work best for your specific home.

  • Are your gutters available in colors other than white?

We always tear off the old roof, as it allows us to inspect the plywood beneath it to check for rot. If there is rot, we will replace the plywood before we begin installation of your roof.

  • Do I need gutter guards?

It depends on your home and surroundings. If you have a lot of trees nearby, your gutters are more likely to fill up with leaves and debris, requiring regular cleaning.

Gutter guards can help with that by keeping most of the leaves and larger debris out of your gutters so water can flow more freely. They do not completely eliminate maintenance but definitely reduce the frequency.
