What are soffit and fascia?

Soffit and Fascia are often mentioned together because they work as a team to help protect your home and keep your attic properly ventilated.

The soffit is located underneath your roof’s overhang. It covers the underside of the eaves and often contains vents that allow fresh air to flow into the attic. This airflow helps reduce heat and moisture buildup, which is important for the overall health of your home.

The fascia is the board that runs along the edge of the roof, just behind your gutters. It’s covered with aluminum to help protect it from the elements and give it a clean, finished look. The fascia also provides the support needed to hold your gutters securely in place.

While they both have different jobs, both soffit and fascia play an important role in protecting your home and helping your roofing system perform the way it should.
How do I know if I need soffit and fascia?

If the underside of your roof overhangs is exposed wood, or if the wood requires regular painting and maintenance, your home may be a good candidate for soffit and fascia. Both help to give your home a clean, finished appearance, but they do more than just improve curb appeal.

Soffit assists in the ventilation of your attic and helps keep pests, such as wasps and other insects, from making homes in your rafters, while fascia helps protect the roof edge from the elements and provides support for your gutters.
Do they both need to be replaced at the same time, or can I just replace one of them?

You can absolutely just replace the fascia if that is all that your home needs. However, if you think that you may want or need soffit down the road, it is usually best to do both at the same time. Since soffit and fascia are installed together, adding soffit later on requires removing and redoing the fascia that is already there. Taking care of both at once will save time, labor, and most importantly money in the long run.
What type of soffit material do you use?

We primarily use vinyl center vent soffit panels, as they are maintenance free, more affordable than other options, and they provide optimal attic ventillation.
What is a vinyl cutback?

A vinyl cutback is the process of trimming back your existing vinyl siding so the new soffit and fascia system can be properly installed and finished. This is only required when your existing vinyl siding will remain in place during the project. If you are replacing your siding at the same time as the soffit and fascia, a vinyl cutback will not be necessary because the new siding can be installed properly to meet the new trim work.
